Fermentation of pharmaceuticals and non-food products

Sugar may be used as an ingredient in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals based on fermentation processes.

Examples include the manufacture of penicillin, dextran (blood-plasma substitute) and lysine (amino acid used to improve the protein quality in pig feed).

Sugar can also be used in the manufacture of ethanol. More than 90% of the sugar's energy content can be transformed into ethanol.
